It is a good idea to display large images with a thumnail link because that way the viewer is able to see the thumnail. That then helps them decide whether they are prepared to put up with the wait that viewing the large version requires.

Image size is an important issue in web site development because, depending on the size of the imagine thats how long it will take to load. If the image is really big, then it will take longer to load then one that is compressed or small.
